The Brief
Castle Lager is the title sponsor of the Rugby Championship and one of South Africa's most visible sports sponsorship properties. On 7 September 2024, the Springboks faced the All Blacks at DHL Stadium in Cape Town — one of the biggest rugby fixtures on the calendar. Jester Sports & Entertainment Group, as Castle Lager's newly appointed sponsorship agency, needed a content team on the ground to cover the brand's full activation footprint at the game.
The brief was precise about creative direction: product-first photography and video, not crowd coverage. Interesting angles where the Castle Lager product leads and the stadium energy is in the background. Content needed to communicate friendship, celebration, and Springbok pride — and it needed to be uploaded and available to the client for download in real time, on the day, as the game was happening.
The Approach
My role was producer — I built and managed the content crew on the ground, briefed the team on the shot list and creative direction, and oversaw delivery logistics so the client had access to content throughout the day.
A live match-day production at DHL Stadium operates at a different pace to a managed event. There's no programme, no scheduled moments, no second takes. The content windows are the crowd filing in, the activations running at full energy, and the atmosphere in the beer garden and bars before and during the game. You need the crew in the right place before the moment peaks — not reacting to it after.
The shot list covered five distinct content zones across the activation footprint: the Scrum-a-Bakkie activation, the Castle Lager bars, promoter and activation area coverage, brand and branding-piece moments, and organic fan coverage where Castle Lager jerseys or merchandise appeared. The creative brief called for bokeh-background, product-in-focus compositions throughout — a technical and editorial discipline that had to be maintained across a loud, fast-moving environment with thousands of people in frame.
All content was processed and uploaded to a live client download link throughout the day. By the time the final whistle blew, the client had a full content library ready to deploy.
The Production
One production day. DHL Stadium, Cape Town. 7 September 2024. 12pm to 5pm.
Activation Coverage
The Scrum-a-Bakkie activation — one of the event's headline fan engagement moments — was documented in full, capturing both the activation mechanics and the organic fan energy around it. Castle Lager promoters across the activation areas and bars were covered throughout, with branding-focused compositions prioritised at each zone.
Bar & Beer Garden Coverage
The Castle Lager beer garden and bar areas provided the primary environment for product-focused photography: rows of branded cups on bar tops, fans raising a Castle Lager toward the camera with the stadium behind them, beer sellers working the stands, cheers shots with multiple cups in frame. Every composition was built to put the product first and the crowd second.
Fan & Brand Moments
Organic fan coverage — Castle Lager jerseys, branded merchandise, and spontaneous moments of celebration — was captured throughout the match window. Back-of-crowd shots with cups raised, friends walking toward each other with beers in hand, and the braai area at full energy were all part of the content output. The brief's core creative directive — friendship, enjoyment, Springbok pride — ran through every frame.
Deliverables
