The Brief
FNB is a principal sponsor of the Springbok Women, and with the Black Ferns XV in South Africa, the two squads came together at SK Walmers RFC in Green Point for a coaching clinic for approximately 100 girls from various age groups. The event was a genuine activation of the sponsorship — not a press call, not a photoshoot. A real coaching session, run by elite international players, for young players who looked up to them.
ASEM Engage commissioned the video production to capture the clinic and deliver content that reflected what actually happened on the day: the skill sessions, the motivational moments, the ticket giveaways, the group photograph, and the meet-and-greet and autograph session that closed the afternoon.
The Approach
My role was producer — I managed the crew on the ground and oversaw post-production through to final delivery.
A coaching clinic like this runs on a tight schedule and moves without pausing. The programme ran from 14:30 to 16:00 — ninety minutes from the first drill to the final farewell. The content priority wasn't the drills themselves. It was the moments between them: a captain's words to 100 girls who were genuinely listening, a young player getting a signature from someone she'd watched on a screen, the weight of a group photo when the people in it actually mean something to each other.
The crew was briefed to stay in observational mode throughout — no direction, no staging, no interruption to the programme. The most valuable content at an event like this is the content that looks like it wasn't being filmed. That requires patience, positioning, and a crew that understands the difference between covering an event and capturing a story.
Post-production was managed to reflect the emotional arc of the afternoon — the energy of the clinic, the gravity of the motivational moment, and the warmth of the meet-and-greet — edited into a final video asset that FNB and ASEM Engage could deploy across brand and social channels.
The Production
One production afternoon at SK Walmers RFC, Green Point, Cape Town. 23 July 2025. 14:20 to 16:00.
The Clinic
From the moment both squads arrived at 14:20, the crew was rolling. The Springbok Women and Black Ferns XV ran the coaching sessions with approximately 100 girls across age groups — skills, drills, and the kind of direct coaching that only happens when world-class players are on the same pitch as the next generation. The visual priority was authentic interaction: players coaching, not posing.
The Motivational Moment
At 15:20, team captains and senior players from both squads addressed the group directly — motivational words, match ticket giveaways, and the kind of moment that doesn't happen at a standard brand activation. This was the emotional centrepiece of the afternoon and was covered in full for the edit.
Group Photo & Meet and Greet
The group photograph at 15:25 and the meet-and-greet from 15:30 — autographs, conversations, and the individual moments between elite players and young fans — were covered with care. These were the frames and sequences that the final edit was built around.
Deliverables
1x video asset — full clinic coverage from arrival to close, edited to reflect the arc of the afternoon, delivered for FNB and ASEM Engage brand and social deployment
Outcome
FNB and ASEM Engage received a video that captured what the sponsorship actually looks like in action — not a logo on a jersey, but two international squads giving 100 young players ninety minutes of their time and attention. That's the story worth telling, and that's what the edit delivered.
