The Brief
The B20 Summit is a high-level business leadership event held at the Century City Convention Centre in Cape Town — a two-day programme spanning a formal Gala Dinner on the first evening and a full-day conference followed by a Cocktail Dinner on the second.
Marsh Media commissioned a video production team to cover both days and deliver a single Hero highlight reel — a polished, cinematic asset distilling the scale and energy of the event into one deployable piece of content. The brief called for seamless coverage across both the evening and conference environments, with post-production delivered to broadcast standard.
The Approach
My role was production management end to end — building and briefing the crew, managing logistics across both days, overseeing camera operations on the ground, and directing post-production through to the final cut.
A two-day event with two distinct environments — a formal gala and a full-day conference — requires a different visual language for each. The Gala called for atmosphere and elegance: the room, the light, the keynote moments, the faces of delegates in conversation. The conference required precision: key speakers, stage energy, audience engagement, and the detail that communicates the weight of what's being discussed in the room.
Both environments fed into a single Hero reel. The edit was built to move — opening with the Gala to establish the event's prestige, transitioning into the conference day's momentum, and closing on the cocktail reception's energy. One reel. Two days. One coherent story.
The Production
Two production days at the Century City Convention Centre, Cape Town.
Day 1 — Monday, 24 February 2025
Gala Dinner, 5pm to 11pm. Evening coverage of the full dinner programme — arrivals, pre-dinner reception, keynote addresses, dinner service, and the close of the evening. The priority was atmosphere and prestige: the visual quality of the room, the gravity of the occasion, and the candid moments between delegates that no stage can manufacture.
Day 2 — Tuesday, 25 February 2025
Full Day Conference and Cocktail Dinner, 8am to 9pm. The longest and most complex production day — thirteen hours across conference sessions, breakout moments, and the evening cocktail reception. Multiple speakers, multiple formats, and a schedule that ran without gaps. The crew covered the conference floor in full before transitioning to the cocktail reception in the evening to close out the programme.
Deliverables
1x Hero highlight reel — both production days edited into a single cinematic asset.
Outcome
The Hero reel gave Marsh Media and the B20 Summit a complete, high-quality visual record of the two-day programme — one asset that communicates the scale of the event, the calibre of the room, and the standard of the production.
